Eligibility Requirements for American Legion Membership

If you are currently on active duty, serving the United States honorably, anywhere in the world, or have served honorably during any of the following eligible war eras, we invite you to become a member of The American Legion.

In the LEGION Act (7/30/19), Congress expanded the current eligibility period to cover Dec. 7, 1941, to the present, and includes the current war campaigns. Previously, there were seven declared war periods. Now there are two, the current war period dating back to World War II and another war era covering World War I. No other restrictions to American Legion membership changed.

MyLegion allows members to view information on file at National Headquarters, view messages and events published through the Department and Post. Property Tax Exemptions for Veterans

There are three different property tax exemptions available to Veterans who have served in the United States Armed Forces. The exemption applies to county, city, town, and village taxes. Exemptions other than the Cold War Exemption may apply to school district taxes. Website


School Property Tax Exemptions for Veterans

With a 5-0 vote the veterans school tax relief resolution PASSED unanimously in February 2014. Thank you Onteora Central School District trustees for passing this resolution!

If you are already receiving veteran tax exemption on town/county taxes, you do not need to do anything further with the assessor . . . the assessor will apply your current percentage to the new school tax exemption.

Any NEW applications or percentage changes (such as SC disability %) need to be into the assessor immediately to take affect in the following tax year.

NYS DMV Photo Document "Veteran" Status Designation

If you are a qualified U.S. military veteran, who was honorably discharged, and you have a NYS driver license, learner permit or non-driver photo ID card, you can have the word "Veteran" printed on the upper left hand of your photo document.

There is no additional fee for the veteran status designation on your document, but all regular transaction fees will apply.

To apply for the veteran status designation:

You must send or provide proof of an honorable discharge. If you apply by mail, send a photocopy of the proof(s). If you apply at a DMV office, you must show the original proof(s), which will be returned to you. Acceptable proofs are:
a U.S. Department of Defense Form DD-214 that indicates an honorable discharge, or
a form DD-215 that indicates an honorable discharge, or
an Honorable Discharge form WD AGO 53, WD AGO 55, WD AGO 53-55, NAVPERS 553, NAVMC 78PD or NAVCG 553, or
an "Enlisted Separation Paper."
You can apply for the veteran status designation when you renew your driver license by mail using your renewal notice (MV-2) and a photocopy of your proof of honorable discharge.
You can apply at a DMV office for a renewal or a replacement document with the veteran status designation. Use the Application for Driver License or Non-Driver ID form MV-44.
You cannot apply by phone or online.
The veteran status will be printed on all of your future NYS DMV photo documents.


Hoffman Car Wash

For the 5th consecutive year Hoffman Car Wash is inviting all active duty and former members of the military to have their vehicle (or vehicles) washed free of charge on Veteran's Day, Thursday, November 11th. If you are not a veteran or in the military, we are asking that you put the word out to all of the veterans with whom you may have contact to let them know about our offer.


KINGSTON - Ulster County is joining the ranks of Rockland, Orange, Putnam and others in offering veterans a discount purchasing program.

The return the F.A.V.O.R. (Find & Assist Veterans of Record)discount program will give honorably discharged veterans the opportunity to apply for a County-issued I.D. card which will allow them to obtain discounts on goods and services at local participating businesses.

Veterans who wish to apply for this program should visit the Veterans' Service Agency located at 308 Flatbush Avenue in Kingston anytime on or after October 18, 2010. They will need to present their DD-214 discharge papers in order to qualify. Once the proper documentation has been verified, they will go to the County Clerk's Office at 244 Fair Street, Kingston, on or after November 8, 2010 to have their picture taken and receive their discount card.

Home Depot

The Home Depot offers a 10% discount to Active Duty, Reserves, Guard, Retirees, or Disabled Veterans. Proof must be in the form of Military ID or Dept. of Veterans Affairs ID (service connected disability must be present on VA ID)

All veterans can save 10% on Memorial Day, 4th of July and Veterans Day weekends with DD 214 at both locations.


Lowes

Lowe's also offers a 10% discount to Active Duty, Reserves, Guard, Retirees, or Disabled Veterans. Proof must be in the form of Military ID, Dept. of Veterans Affairs ID card, or other official Government form of ID.


NY State

New York plate NY State has many license plate options available to Veterans of every branch of service and many Campaigns. Certain plates require forms only available online. Call the Custom Plates unit at (518)402-4838 or click on the license plates for more information.
